ผมจะยกตัวอย่าง ในส่วนของ Windows Server ผมจะยกตัวอย่างเป็น Windows Server 2003 แล้วกันนะครับ แล้ว Windows ที่ผู้ใช้ ทั่วไป  ก็จะเป็น Windows XP

ความแตกต่างระหว่าง Windows Server 2003 และ Windows XP สามารถแตกต่างกันมากพอสมควร และหน้าที่แตกต่างกัน (ผมขอพูดตามประการณ์นะครับ)

[ Windows Server 2003 ]

Windows Server 2003 มีหลาย Edition คล้ายๆกับ Windows XP นะครับ เนื่องจาก แต่ละ Edition ของ Windows Server นั้น มีราคาที่ต่างกันและการรองรับในส่วน CPU และ Ram ที่จำกัดและการ
ทำไมต้องมีหลาย Edition ทั้งที่ มี ฟ๊เจอร์ เหมือนกัน เพราะว่า ตามขนาดของ ธุรกิจที่ท่านได้ นำไป ใช้ ถ้า ท่านใช้กับธุรกิจ เล็ก มีเครื่อง Client จำนวน 20 - 100, 200 ท่านใช้ Standard Edition ซึ่ง ราคา ถูกกว่า ในราคา 30000 กว่าบาท แต่ถ้า ใน Enterprise Edition ราคาจะแตกต่างกัน ราคาประมาณ ที่ แสนกว่าบาท ทางบริษัท Microsoft จึงสร้างทางเลือกให้ User หรือบริษัทที่จะนำไปใช้
ช่วยลดต้นทุนได้ ต่อไปดูความแตกต่างละ Edition นะครับ แล้วจะอธิบายต่อว่า Windows Server 2003 มีหน้าที่ทำอะไร บ้าง และแตกต่างกับ Windows XP อย่างไร

ราคา : 15000 (โดยประมาณนะครับ ราคาสามารถปรับเปลี่ยนได้นะครับ)

ลองสังเกตุนะครับ ระหว่าง Standard Edition และ Enterprise Edition และ Datacenter Edition และ Web Edition ที่ผม ได้ Highilight ไว้หนะครับ
ว่า Memory(Random Access Memory [ RAM ]) และ CPU(Central Processing Unit)  Limit แตกต่างกันขนาดไหน
Standard Edition Maximum ที่
CPU : Max 4 CPU
RAM : 4 GB
Detail : เหมาะสำหรับมี User ไม่มากและใช้รัน Application ที่ใช้ ทรัพยากรไม่มาก

Enterprise Edition Maximum ที่
CPU : Max 16 CPU
RAM : 64 GB
Detail : เหมาะสำหรับที่มี User มากกว่า 500 User และใช้รัน Application ที่ใช้ ทรัพยากรสูงมากอีกทั้งต้องใช้ความสามารถสูง เช่น Failover Clustering

Datacenter Edition มากถึง 
CPU : Max 32 CPU
RAM : 128 GB
Detail : เหมาะสำหรับ ใช้รัน Application ที่ใช้ทรัพยากรสูงมากๆ เช่น Data Warehousing, VLDB ( Very Large Database System ) or Database System Maximum 10 TB

Web Edition เพียง
CPU : Max 2 CPU
RAM : 2 GB
Detail : ใน Edition นี้ชิ่อได้บอกอยู่แล้วว่าสามารถทำสิ่งใดได้บ้าง ว่า Run Web Application หรือทำ Web Server นั้นเอง แต่ความสามารถในการทำงานหลายเครื่องพร้อมกันได้ดี
โดยอาศัยเทคโนโลยี Load Balancing

ทำให้ท่านที่เลือกชื้อ เครื่อง Server ต้องให้ ได้ตาม ความต้องการของแต่ ละ Edition ด้วยนะครับมิเช่นนั้นอาจจะเกิน การทำงานที่ไม่เต็มประสิทธิ์ภาพ

 มารู้จัก Windows Server 2003 กันนะครับ

Windows Server 2003 เป็นระบบปฎิบัติการเน็ตเวิร์ค นะครับ หรือเรียกกันว่า ( Network Operating System : NOS ) เป็นระบบปฎิบัติการที่ Microsoft ทุ่มเททุนมหาศาล
เพื่อพัฒนา Windows Server 2003 โดยคนออกแบบ Programmer, วิศกรระบบ และอื่นๆมากกว่า 8000 คนร่วมกันออกแบบระบบนี้ นับเป็นเทคโนโลยีที่ก้าวกระโดดใน ระบบ
ปฎิบัติการ Network Microsoft สร้าง Windows Server 2003 เพื่อมาทดแทน Windows 2000 Server โดย Windows Server 2003 นั้นได้ปรับปรุงและแก้ไขรอยรั่วและ bug
อื่นๆที่มีใน Windows 2000 Server รวมทั้ง IIS 6 ( Internet Information Service 6 ) และพัฒนาระบบความปลอดภัยให้มากขึ้นและเสถียรภาพขึ้นอย่างมาก และ
Windows Server 2003 ได้ถูก Configuration แบบ Secure By Default ( ปลอดภัยไว้ก่อน ) Windows Server 2003 เป้น NOS แล้ว ยังให้บริการอินเตอร์เน็ต เช่น
Web Server, Mail Server ที่ทำงานโดยได้ความเสถียรภาพมาก

หลายท่านอาจจะบอกว่า Windows Server 2003 อาจจะเหมือนกับ Windows 2000 Server แต่จริงแล้วความแตกต่างมีอยู่มากหลายเรื่องและ ฟีเจอร์ ที่เพิ่มมากขึ้น ใน
Windows Server 2003 แต่ยอมรับว่าผู้ที่เคยใช้ Windows 2000 Server จะเรียนรู้การใช้งานและ Interface ต่างๆได้ไม่ยากนักเพียงศึกษาเพิ่มเติมพอประมาณก็ใช้ได้
คล่องแคล่วแล้ว แต่สำหรับผู้ที่ใช้ ระบบปฎิบัติการ Unix มาก่อนอาจจะต้องทำความเข้าใจอีกมากพอสมควรเพระความแตกต่างระหว่าง Unix กับ Windows Server 2003
ต่างกันโดยสิ้นเชืองแต่ถูกสร้างขึ้นเพื่อทำหน้าที่ใกล้เคียงกัน Windows Server 2003 สามารถ Command Line ได้ เช่นเดียวกับ Unix โดยสามารถใช้ Command Line
ในการปรับแต่ง Configuration ได้ทั้งหมด

แนะนำเพิ่มเติมสำหรับท่านที่จะศึกษา หรือ สั่งชื้อระบบ ปฎิบัติการ Windows Server 2003 
ตั้งแต่นี้เป้นต้นไปกรุณามองหาผลิตภัณฑ์ที่มี คำว่า R2 อยู่ด้วย "Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, Web Edition"
ทำไมถึงต้อง R2 เนื่องจาก R2 หรือ Release 2 เป้น Update Release ที่เพิ่มความสามารถใหม่ๆที่จำเป็นมากมายและ Update Security Patch และ Patch อื่นๆอีกมากมาย
ซึ่ง Microsoft รวบรวมทุกอย่างและ Patch มาลงใน R2 ให้โดยเราไม่ต้องตาม Update และบางอย่างไม่สามารถ Update ในที่ไม่มี R2
